A Pilgrimage for Buddhist Scriptures
—The Grand Master Tang Xuanzang
18 May 2015 – 20 November 2015
Exhibition Room 5
This exhibition traces the life of Tang Xuanzang, highlighting his journey to the West to obtain Buddhist scriptures, his return to China, and his subsequent efforts in translating Buddhist scriptures, writing scholarly works, and promoting Buddhist teachings. It also explores the profound impact he had on future generations. Featuring nearly 50 representative artifacts related to Xuanzang, India, cultural exchanges between China and the West, and the Silk Road, the exhibition is divided into six sections: Prologue, the Return of the Pilgrim, Translating the Scriptures, the Doctrine of Consciousness-Only, Mentoring Disciples, and Legacy.
These artifacts not only provide vivid insights into Tang Xuanzang’s life but also serve as valuable references for scholarly research on him.
The exhibition focuses on Xuanzang’s achievements after his return to Chang’an, set against the backdrop of the flourishing Buddhist culture of the Tang Dynasty. To ensure a cohesive visual identity, the display cases share a uniform design and color scheme dominated by yellow, a color sacred to Buddhism, symbolizing wisdom and the Middle Way, representing the highest truth in Buddhist philosophy.
To enhance the visitors’ experience, various artistic and multimedia elements are incorporated. The Prologue Hall features a three-dimensional silhouette illuminated by light, creating a grand image of Tang Xuanzang’s return. Additionally, two interactive zones allow visitors to be engaged in activities with replicas and illustrations, deepening their understanding and appreciation of the exhibition.
As the saying goes, “Civilizations thrive through exchange and mutual learning.” Today, the brilliance of Eastern civilization, particularly the cultures of China and India, continues to shine globally, with Xuanzang’s legacy forever etched in history.
