— Commemorative Exhibition for the 100th Anniversary of He Zhenghuang’s Birth
20 December 2014 – 30 March 2015
Exhibition Room 7
This exhibition is to commemorate the 100th anniversary of He Zhenghuang’s birth. She is a female pioneer in China’s cultural and museum industry. She is often referred to as Master He Zhenghuang because of her dedication to art archaeology and cultural relics work. Her proposal of establishing “Xi’an Stone Carving Art Room” in Shaanxi History Museum in the early 1960s, laid the foundation for three permanent exhibition systems: the Ancient History, the Stone Carving Art, and the Stele Forest. He Zhenghuang left behind a wealth of travel notes, essays, survey reports, research papers, and poetry. She built a bridge between the fields of cultural heritage and art, earning high acclaim in both realms.
The exhibition tells about He Zhenghuang’s life: her childhood and teenage life in Tokyo and Hankou; pursuing art study in Wuchang and Japan in the 1930s; joining the army to fight against Japanese aggression in 1937, and her participation in the field study organized by the government where she met her husband in 1940; her unremitting work in Shaanxi Provincial History Museum since 1950. The exhibits, comprising over 230 precious photographs and artifacts provided by He Zhenghuang’s children, offer visitors a comprehensive view of her lifelong dedication to the cultural heritage cause.
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of He Zhenghuang’s birth, this exhibition is a tribute to this remarkable woman, with highest respects for her contributions to China’s cultural heritage and art archeology.
