Elegance and Playfulness:
—An Exhibition of Ancient Chinese Tin Pot Art
25 March 2016 – 25 May 2016
Tin ware is the pride of ancient Chinese metal craftsmanship. They possess rich cultural connotations, unique craftsmanship values, and artistic allure, making them treasures of China’s excellent traditional culture.
The history of tin ware production in China dates back to the Shang and Zhou dynasties. However, the production of tin pots emerged later, gaining prominence during the Ming Dynasty with creative and intricate designs. During the Qing Dynasty, tin pot production reached its peak, innovatively combined with materials like purple clay, porcelain, jade, lacquer, sandalwood, and coconut shell. But the tin ware industry declined in the late Republic of China and gradually disappeared after the founding of the People’s Republic of China. Today, surviving tin pots are exceedingly rare. National collections, primarily housed in the Palace Museum and the National Museum, number only around 200 pieces, making them a forgotten yet precious cultural heritage.
This exhibition, jointly sponsored by Shaanxi History Museum and Shaanxi Weimei Cultural Development Co., Ltd., is divided into four sections: “the History of Tin Pot”, “the Craftsmanship of Tin Pot”, “the Classification of Tin Pot”, and “the Art of Tin Pot”.
Featuring over 200 pieces of rare and exquisite ancient Chinese tin ware, the exhibition presents a dazzling array of styles and masterpieces. The innovative and unique design, combined with hands-on activities for visitors, aims to create a cultural and artistic feast for all to enjoy.
