—Protecting the Ancient Great Wall and the Qin-Dynasty Expressway in Shaanxi
24 October 2016 – 24 November 2016
Exhibition Room 6
Open to the public free of charge for one month, the exhibition offers a comprehensive exploration of the protection efforts concerning Shaanxi’s ancient Great Wall and Qin-Dynasty Expressway sites.
Inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1987, the Great Wall, the largest and most widely distributed cultural heritage site in China, is renowned worldwide for its exceptional architecture and unparalleled cultural landscape. Shaanxi Province boasts the richest resources of the ancient Great Wall in China, with sections spanning Yulin, Yan’an, Tongchuan, Weinan, and Hancheng.
With a total length of about 750 kilometers, of which 478 kilometers is within Shaanxi, Qin-Dynasty Expressway is a special road for military preparedness built by Emperor Qin Shi Huang to defend against and conquer the Xiongnu in the north. After the Han Dynasty, it played an important role in business exchanges, cultural communication, and ethnic integration, carrying the profound marks of the exchange and mutual learning of ancient Chinese civilizations.
The exhibition is divided into two main sections: “Protection of the Ancient Great Wall Sites in Shaanxi” and “Protection of the Qin Expressway Sites in Shaanxi”. It delves into the origins, evolution, purposes, historical significance, current state, and conservation history of these monumental sites. With texts, images, and precious artifacts, the exhibition presents a simple yet elegant and innovative layout. It also highlights the latest achievements in surveys, planning, archaeology, conservation, and public display, as well as the remarkable contributions of cultural heritage workers, social volunteers, and local conservationists.
This exhibition aims to raise public awareness and inspire active participation in the protection of historical and cultural heritage.
