—Calligraphy and Paintings by Masters Zhang and Pu
Collected in Jilin Provincial Museum
12 March 2017 – 24 April 2017
This exhibition presents a meticulously curated selection of high-quality works by two legendary painters, Zhang Daqian and Pu Xinyu, from the collection of Jilin Provincial Museum. It offers visitors an opportunity to explore the unique charm and artistic brilliance of these two iconic figures, celebrated as “Zhang of the South and Pu of the North”.
Zhang Daqian, renowned for his magnificent and vivid ink-wash paintings, masterfully blended traditional Chinese techniques with his own innovative styles. His works span a wide range of subjects, including flowers and birds, landscapes, figures, meticulous brushwork, and freehand brushwork, showcasing his versatility and creativity.
Pu Xinyu, an exceptional painter with profound cultural heritage, was known for his elegant and refined style. He studied the Southern-Song-dynasty imperial painting style, which was often overlooked by literati painters, and transformed its sharpness into the simplicity of the Yuan dynasty style. This unique approach earned him the title of “a Northerner with a Southern style.”
The exhibition also highlights the efforts of Mr. Zhang Boju, who served as the executive deputy director of Jilin Provincial Museum in the 1960s. His dedication to collecting works by these two masters from various sources has preserved their artistic legacy. The selected pieces in this exhibition are of exceptional artistic and historical value, offering a profound insight into their contributions to Chinese art.
This exhibition is a must-see for art enthusiasts and scholars alike, providing a deeper understanding of the artistic achievements of Zhang Daqian and Pu Xinyu, and their enduring influence on Chinese calligraphy and painting.
