Documenting Treasures and Preserving Heritage
—The First National Survey of Movable Cultural Relics in Shaanxi Province
18 May 2017 – 8 August 2017
Exhibition Room 7
To commemorate the achievements of the First National Survey of Movable Cultural Relics in Shaanxi Province, promote the application and public sharing of these findings, and raise awareness of cultural heritage protection across society, this exhibition was specially planned and organized by the Shaanxi Cultural Heritage Administration and opened on International Museum Day 2017.
Cultural relic surveys are a cornerstone of the scientific protection and utilization of cultural heritage. Conducting such surveys and establishing comprehensive systems for the investigation and documentation of cultural relics is common practice worldwide. In October 2012, following the Third National Survey of Immovable Cultural Relics, the State Council launched the First National Survey of Movable Cultural Relics, marking a pivotal effort to assess and preserve China’s cultural heritage resources.
Shaanxi’s long and illustrious history has endowed it with a rich, diverse, and highly significant cultural heritage. With its vast number of relics, high density of cultural sites, and exceptional quality, Shaanxi ranks among the top regions in China and is often referred to as a “natural history museum” and a “historical and cultural base showcasing Chinese civilization”. This exhibition not only highlights the achievements of the survey but also underscores the importance of preserving and documenting cultural treasures for future generations. It invites visitors to explore and appreciate the profound legacy of Shaanxi’s cultural heritage.
