Carving Wood into Perfection
—Restoration of Wood Ware in Shaanxi History Museum
29 April 2018 – 1 July 2018
Digital Experience Area
As the second session of exhibition season on cultural relic restoration, this exhibition draws inspiration from the ancient tale of Zi Qing, a master craftsman who achieved perfection by quieting his mind, harmonizing virtue with skill, and transcending worldly distractions. His legacy embodies the essence of Chinese craftsmanship, a spirit that this exhibition seeks to celebrate.
The exhibition provides a comprehensive exploration of the museum’s wooden furniture collection, detailing the current state of the artifacts, the intricate restoration processes, and the methods employed for their preservation and care. Visitors will gain a deeper appreciation for the artistry and precision involved in restoring the timeless beauty of these masterpieces.
A highlight of the exhibition is the hands-on area, where visitors can be engaged in assembling various mortise and tenon joint models. By assembling these components themselves, visitors will uncover the intricacies of traditional joinery techniques and the sophisticated internal structures of Ming-and-Qing-dynasty hardwood furniture.
This exhibition not only showcases the meticulous art of restoration but also invites visitors to connect with the timeless wisdom and ingenuity of Chinese craftsmanship.
