Pursuit of Perfection
—The Ceramics Restoration in Shaanxi History Museum
1 September 2018 – 31 December 2018
Digital Experience Area
This exhibition is the fourth session of the exhibition season on cultural relic restoration in our museum since February 2018. It mainly displays the investigation and analysis of the current status of the museum ceramic collections unearthed from tombs at the suburbs of Xi’an from the 1950s to 1960s, the restoration process, and the scientific testing methods, allowing the public to have a close observation of the daily work of restorers and the process of the restoration. The restored ceramics are shown to the public for the first time.
The exhibition has set up a hands-on area with a variety of ceramic fragments and repair adhesives. The visitors can assemble ceramic fragments based on their size, shape, and patterns by means of matching and bonding, to experience the joys and sorrows during the cultural relic restoration.
The exhibition is named “Pursuit of Perfection” as praise for the superb skills and constant pursuit of perfection by Xu Youquan, a master in making boccaro ware during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty. It is also intended to inspire the ceramic restoration workers to inherit the spirit of ancient craftsmen and continuously improve their techniques.
