Revival of the Glowing Colors
—Restoration of Tang Tomb Murals at Shaanxi History Museum
8 January 2019 – 7 April 2019
Tang tomb murals are exquisite treasures of human cultural heritage which provide important visual materials for studying the history of the Tang Dynasty. This exhibition aims to demonstrate how such a mural is restored to its original look.
The exhibition mainly shows the investigation methods of the current problems, the selection of protective materials and techniques, and the measures for protecting the murals, so that the audience could have a close observation and understanding of Tang tomb mural protection and restoration. The example object of this exhibition is the mural Halberds and Guards which was unearthed from a Tang noble’s tomb in the suburb of Xi’an in the 1950s and is first shown to the public.
The exhibition has set up a hands-on area. Based on printed partial images of murals, the audience can personally experience the process of copying Tang murals onto rice paper through steps such as sketching, drawing lines, coloring, and antique finishing.
This has been the fifth session of the exhibition series on cultural relic restoration in our museum since February 2018.
