Products of Fish Skin, Animal Skin, and Birch Bark from Heilongjiang
29 January 2019 – 29 March 2019
Exhibition Room 6
Northeast China has dense forests and numerous lakes. The local ethnic groups make use of fish skin to produce waterproof suits, or animal fur for making clothes and beddings to resist the cold, and process the birch bark which is flexible and does not not easily rot, for various daily necessities. In 2006, the craftsmanship on birch bark and fish skin was included in the first batch of the Chinese National Intangible Cultural Heritage List. Many of the masterpiece works on display are from the representative inheritors of the national intangible cultural heritage.
The exhibition is divided into four parts: “The Fish Skin”, “the Fur Clothes”, “The Birch Bark”, and “The Inheritance”. It displays more than 100 precious cultural relics from the collection of Heilongjiang Provincial Museum, providing a comprehensive and detailed interpretation of the regional and ethnic characteristic culture based on the fishing and hunting economy.
This exhibition is aimed at promoting outstanding traditional Chinese culture, and the exchange and cooperation between our museum and Heilongjiang Provincial Museum. We also hope to provide a chance for the audience in Xi’an to experience the unique history and culture of the Northeast ethnic minorities during the Lunar New Year period.
