Tripod (Ding) of Yu; Cauldron
Large image
The huge tripod of Yu bears an inscription of four lines of 28 characters, recording that Wang Jiang, the empress of King Kang of Zhou, reclaimed the land that was originally given to Shi Lu and transferred it to Yu who then made this tripod as a memorial. This event reflects the ideology in the Western Zhou that all the lands belonged to the king and all the people must obey the king’s rule. This tripod inherited the round-tripod style of the previous Shang, standing stately with exquisite decorations. The inscription on the inner wall provides valuable information for studying the land administration in the early Western Zhou Dynasty with significant historical and artistic value. Furthermore, since its casting time has been precisely recorded in the inscription, it is also used as a reference for identifying other bronze ware produced during the reign of King Kang of Zhou.
