Mural: Receiving Foreign Envoys
Large image
This mural, located on the east wall of the tomb passage of Prince Zhanghuai of the Tang Dynasty, is a vivid visual record of the diplomatic and cultural exchanges during the heyday of the Tang Dynasty. It is composed of six people, including three prudent Tang officials from Honglusi (an ancient counterpart of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs) wearing top cage hats and wide sleeved red robes, and three foreign envoys standing obediently and respectfully delivering certain anticipation. The bald figure wearing a purple robe with a lapel collar is believed to be from the Eastern Roman Empire; the one wearing a pointed small crown with bird feathers on the side might be a messenger from Silla on the Korean Peninsula; the last one with a round face and a flip-ear leather hat resembles a person from the Mohe ethnic tribe in Northeast China.
