This mural is the best-preserved and the most vibrant reflection of female images in Tang tomb paintings. It was found on the east wall of the front chamber of Princess Yongtai’s tomb. A chief maid wearing a high bun leads eight other maids, who respectively hold a square case, a wine cup, a dust brush, a ruyi backscratcher, a candle, and round fans. Each one has a plump and graceful figure, with intricately-designed buns on their heads, scarves draped over the shoulders, and long dresses trailing along the floor. They are walking slowly in groups, whispering, glancing back or contemplating gently, and everyone is depicted in detail with a sense of tranquility and elegance. The mural, renowned for its ultimate vividness and monumentality in Chinese art, offers a fascinating glimpse into the palace maids and the operation of the imperial household in the Tang Dynasty.
