Mural: Hunting Trip
Large image
This mural, found on the east wall of the tomb passage of Prince Zhanghuai of the Tang Dynasty, depicts a grand hunting procession of Tang nobles consisting of 40 mounted riders. The galloping hunters are in various postures showing their focus and excitement during the hunt, and their attendants, with the supply-carrying camels are following closely. The composition is particularly designed to create a sense of movement and narrative, leading the viewer’s eye across the scene as if they are in the midst of a fast-paced hunting trip. Bright and vivid hues are used for the clothing of the figures and the decoration of the horses, adding to the festive and energetic atmosphere. The mural provides valuable insights into the social and leisure activities of the Tang aristocracy who considered hunting as not only a pastime but also a display of their physical prowess, military skills and social status. It is an artistic testament to the high level of realistic painting skills during the prosperous Tang Dynasty as well as a historical record of the feudal rulers’ luxurious social lifestyle at that time.
